The new Carbon Footprint (CF) feature scheduled to be added to IMDS has already been introduced several times through previous newsletters. In this article, we will provide a summary based on the release 15 announcement made on April 25.
Previous Newsletters
Overview
Carbon footprint information can be managed in regular MDS(Material Data Sheets), excluding public standard MDS.
Since carbon footprint data is managed separately for each MDS version, the same carbon footprint information is not shared when a new MDS version is created. However, since the versioning of the MDS and the carbon footprint data are handled independently, it is possible to create a new version of the carbon footprint without generating a new MDS version.
Carbon footprint information is divided into the following two sections:
Product Carbon Footprint
Based on the production site where the product is manufactured
Displayed in table format within the details panel under the Ingredients tab
Allows for the addition of multiple production sites

PCF Contact Person
A dedicated PCF contact person will be introduced. A contact person must be designated each time product carbon footprint information is entered. Similar to the IMDS contact person, it is also possible to set a default PCF contact person. If the originally assigned PCF contact person becomes inactive, the default PCF contact person will be displayed.

Product Carbon Footprint / Production Sites
You can open a dialog to enter detailed information by clicking “Ingredients → Details → Product Carbon Footprint → + icon.” Fields marked with an asterisk (*) are mandatory. Before a new version is released, a validation check is performed to ensure that all required fields are correctly filled out. Once the information is published, it cannot be deleted; however, a production site can be “discontinued” by clicking the “– icon” under Product Carbon Footprint. A discontinued site can be reactivated by creating a new version.

Production site: Primary identifier of the production site
PCF contact: Assigned contact person
Standards & Verification: Methods used for carbon data calculation

Product Carbon Footprint – PCF of Referenced MDSs
Read-only field
Sum of PCFs from all directly referenced nodes/modules/MDSs
Aggregates the lowest total PCF value among all active production sites
Serves as a reference point to compare with the entered total PCF value; a warning is triggered if the entered value is lower than the calculated value
Product Carbon Footprint – PDS / DQR
PDS (Primary Data Share): Proportion of directly measured data, entered as a value between 0–100%
DQR (Data Quality Rating – Technology, Time & Geography): Data quality assessment based on technology, time, and geography, entered as a value between 1–5 (lower values indicate higher quality)
The only fields visible to downstream companies other than the immediate customer
Detailed GHG Emissions & Carbon Content
Hidden optional field, initially collapsed and set to a default value of “0”
When the value is changed, the fields will automatically expand to ensure user awareness
Transport Carbon Footprint / Transport Routes
You can open a dialog to enter detailed information by clicking “Recipient data → Details → Product Carbon Footprint → + icon.” Transport routes, displayed as combinations of production sites and customer sites, can be added as needed. Fields marked with an asterisk (*) are mandatory. Before a new version is released, a validation check is performed to ensure that all required fields are correctly filled out. Once the information is published, it cannot be deleted. However, transport routes can be “discontinued” by clicking the “– icon” under Product Carbon Footprint. Discontinued transport routes can be reactivated by creating a new version.

Visibility to Downstream Companies
The presence or absence of carbon footprint information should not be a reason for rejection. Due to this reason, carbon footprint information will be visible after the MDS is approved.

Approved MDS: Transport carbon footprint and production site information assigned to the recipient data can be viewed. If no transport carbon footprint is provided, all production sites are displayed, but only PDS/DQR information is visible.
Referenced MDS within approved or published MDS: Only DQR and PDS information is displayed.

Copying / versioning Module/MDSs
When copying a module/MDS or creating a new version, all production sites and production site–customer site combinations from the latest version of the carbon footprint information are copied into the new module/MDS. The copied carbon footprint information becomes the first editable version in the new module/MDS. Production sites or transport routes marked as “discontinued” are not copied.
PCF Updates Email
A new subscription type called “PCF Updates” will be added. For approved MDSs, if any carbon footprint information has been updated during the past week, the details will be sent in a weekly email.
